A Colourful Mermaid

This is a very colourful outfit that I have been planning in my mind for quite a long time - I just had to wait for all of the pieces to come to me in the mail (all the way to Australia, so it's been a while!) I'm very happy because it turned out exactly as I imagined. I'm going to save this outfit for an overcast, rainy day.

Some days, I just want to post pretty outfits on my blog. The science I'm really focusing on at the moment at uni is all about eukaryotic transcriptional and translational regulation and how cells regulate their mRNAs, eIFs and other proteins to control gene expression. While I am finding it very fascinating, it's not the easiest thing for communicating here (in fact I showed it to Luci, who just said "yeah... that was all gobbledegook. Like, I got some words were in English, but that was all I understood.")
So I hope you all don't get mad at me for missing out on a science fact today. Alright... a little science fact then. Many of you were interested by my Synaesthesia post the other day, and said that you also strongly associate colours with numbers or letters, but don't actually see them. Have a look at Ideasthesia. Probably, the majority of people have some form of this (just look at the "Kiki and Bouba" effect, for instance. Why would most people associate a spiky shape with the word "kiki" and a rounded shape with "bouba"? Do we all have a predisposition to synaesthetic-like-qualities?).

Icecream / Colours & Theory of Mind

Today I decided that imitating a giant ice cream would be a fine idea, and I have not regretted it one bit. Except that I somewhat melted in the almost-autumn-heat wearing my new op-shop finds: this lilac sweater and mint-green blouse. Aren't they the prettiest things?

Alright, so this is really interesting to me as both a science-minded lady and someone who is into fashion! Again, I have another science post all about perception, to convince you that the "realities" we experience are largely all in our own minds. This thought experiment has always interested me: the colours we experience are less of an absolute physical property of the world, and more something our mind interprets as all the different colours of the rainbow.  Colour is an illusion. Therefore, both you and I could look at an apple, and call it "red", but my "red" could be totally different to your "red", and if I were to hop inside your brain and have a look at your "red", I might think it was actually green. Have a watch of this video from the fantastic V-sauce, who explains this idea a little better then I did just there.

Mermaid Bay

I promised you guys I'd get some beach shots while I was on holidays. Shooting at "golden hour" on a beach with a flowy, over-the-top dress (and credit for the photographs goes to my boyfriend Luci) is something I have wanted to do for so long now. It's probably cliché but it's also really pretty, so who cares?
These beaches are amazing, and basically deserted, meaning we often have them all to ourselves. I am so lucky to be able to visit these beaches for a holiday, and when the sun sets, and the stars come out (spectacularly - due to there being very little light pollution) it feels pretty magical.
Hope you're all having a beautiful day,

I'm Madeline!

You guys have no idea how long I've wanted a cape coat! So when Faith & Lola asked me if I wanted anything from their store to try out I had to choose this! It's got a peter pan collar, the cutest little buttons and some super pretty crocheted lining around the sleeves and bottom of the cape. I'm completely, completely in love. Luckily I also happen to live in a place with a totally bizarre and unstable climate (it's about 20 degrees colder than when I was complaining about the heat yesterday), so it was easily cold enough to layer up today and wear my new coat.
This cape also happens to go perfectly with these sunflower sweater clips (which you can buy from my store here!)

Today Phil Plait shared his pick of the best Astronomy images of 2012 - and they are mind-blowingly awesome.
My favourite is this one that the deep-field Hubble space telescope took - the astronomers decided to point the telescope at a part of the sky which they thought was empty, do a set of super long exposures... and came up with this. Each bright "star" you see is actually a whole galaxy - and some of the galaxies it captured are 13 billion light years away. That means we are seeing them as they existed 13 billion years ago, almost as old as the universe, because of the time it takes light to reach us. I can't even wrap my head around the fact that we are able to see things like this. Go science!

Much love to you all!

Pink is actually anti-green

Hello beautiful blog readers! I'm super excited to introduce you to an Australian label that I started working with just last week - Faith & Lola. They make some seriously gorgeous dresses, and I am a little bit (actually, a lot) smitten with this lacey, neon, puffy-skirted, backless pink number. They're a small label so they don't have their own online store, however you can pick their stuff up from here (and you can find this particular dress right here).
Also (alert: science nerd-dom) it may interest you to know that the pink you are seeing in these photos doesn't actually exist (see the end of this post).

So in case you were interested in where my odd post title came from, check this video out. Minute physics explains why pink doesn't actually exist, and should in fact be called minus-green. Watch this, then go look at the pink dress again and totally freak out. Or at least think "hmm. That's cool I guess." This is why science is amazing.

(If that fascinated you, I post stuff like that on my sciencey blog all the time. You should go check it out.)

Much love,
